A Promising Start: The Opening Week at Jurassic Lake Lodge

The first week of the fishing season at Jurassic Lake Lodge is always a special one. The lake has been rested through the long Patagonian winter, the fish are on the feed, and the crew is dialed in for the season ahead. Guests who join us in the opening weeks tend to find pristine water, minimal pressure and the kind of quiet on the lake that sets the tone for the rest of the season.

Lago Strobel, known for its crystalline water and dramatic surroundings, is at its most generous in early spring. Conditions can range from bright still mornings to the occasional snow squall that reminds you where you are, sometimes both in the same afternoon. It is part of what makes the opening weeks feel like a small privilege.

A typical opening week produces a healthy mix of fish. Anglers can expect around thirty rainbow trout per day in the seven to twenty pound range, and every season the lake delivers a handful of larger specimens as well. Some of them are landed and returned, others get away and become the story of the trip.

The early season is friendly to first time fly fishers, too. Most opening groups include a couple of anglers new to the sport, and the fishing rewards them. The trout are plentiful and willing, and our guides have the time to work with each angler one on one.

The most productive water in the first week is usually the river mouth and the surrounding bays, including the well known Bahia Cochinos. That bay is home to some of the finest trout in the area. It is exposed to the wind and can be technical to cast in, but the fish that live there make the effort worth it.

Dry flies tend to dominate the early season fly boxes, with streamers and nymphs coming into play as conditions ask for them. Our guides adjust as the days go on and each angler settles into a rhythm.
